Slide 70 and on show some of what I’m talking about. Maybe it’s just all the steel blue gradients and such. Still I’d like to see some serious PowerPoint improvement. I’ve been getting pretty jealous of Keynote users lately.

It is not just the operating system which has its quirks and foibles. It include programs like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and what have you. The fact that Microsoft has rarely created these programs is besides the point. It has taken them given them the Microsoft touch and now they are embedded in corporate minds around the world. Which is why Bill Gates became a very rich man. (And is doing wonders with this money for which he deserves a special place in Heaven.

At the moment we don’t know. What I do know is that when personal tragedy collides with strategic challenges deeply human impulses can overwhelm cold calculations. Perhaps this shouldn’t be the way things go but life doesn’t click by in PowerPoint. I’ve encountered my share of messianic CEs who never come to see the company they run as being public; they see the company as being theirs. So much of what they know has been learned by word of mouth trial and error help from co-workers and puzzling through help screens. This knowledge is a marketable asset in the job market. Employers expect employees to know how to do email wordprocessing spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations. Employers pay people to use these skills to perform valuable work for the company. They do not pay people to learn new operating systems. Vista user interface designers forgot that their customers are very busy these days. >Just who is Ray zzie and what is the deal?. As slogans go it’s not particularly catchy. But the sentiment is clear: Just packaging software collecting the money and then producing a new version a few years later (whether people want one or not) is no longer a sustainable business plan. The relationship with customers must be constant and continuous. Instead of discrete onetime transactions the money?whether from subscription fees or advertising?will flow constantly.

About 10 million of those seem to take place in the Washington D. Lord knows with the advent of a new Administration next week — and the arrival of all sorts of “plum job” holders — millions of your friends and neighbors will soon be even more bleary-eyed.
