The South African Bureau of Standards sent a letter of protest to two computer industry organizations here that held a worldwide ballot on Microsoft's bid last month complaining that the process was poorly conducted and rushed. “We challenge the validity of a process that from beginning to end required all parties to analyze far too much information in far too little time” the bureau's chief executive Martin Kuscus said in the letter to the International Standards rganization and the International Electrotechnical Commission. Long before Microsoft started selling ffice 2007 its plan to switch to the ffice pen XML format for Word Excel and PowerPoint files sparked worries among competitors that changes made by the software maker could render government or corporate archives unreadable – especially by non-Microsoft programs. The 2007 Microsoft ffice system already provides support for 20 different document formats within Microsoft ffice Word ffice Excel and ffice PowerPoint. With the release of Microsoft ffice 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) scheduled for the first half of 2009 the list will grow to include support for XML Paper Specification (XPS) Portable Document Format (PDF) 1. When using SP2 customers will be able to open edit and save documents using DF and save documents into the XPS and PDF fixed formats from directly within the application without having to install any other code.
