Google and Microsoft: competing for the document collaboration space
Computer Business Review – Mar 28, 2008
It has been two years since Google entered the office productivity applications and collaboration arena with the acquisition of Writely a web-hosted word processor. Since then the company has added spreadsheets and presentations to its portfolio and has launched the Google Apps service: an offering comprised of Gmail Google Calendar Google Talk (a Windows-based application for voice over IP and instant messaging) Google Docs Google Page Creator (a Web site creation and hosting service) and Google Sites (a facility for building team-oriented information sharing web sites). In response Microsoft has also launched a new service to help individuals and teams collaborate. Called ffice Live Workspace this free service lets users save share and edit Microsoft ffice documents via the web. Users can save documents spreadsheets and presentations directly from Word Excel and PowerPoint and they can also synchronise contact task and event lists with utlook: a mode of operation sufficiently different to Google’s offering to make a difference. Google and Microsoft aren’t the only companies offering cloud-based office applications and document collaboration facilities. For example Adobe has Buzzword a Flash-based word processor that makes Google’s word processing tool look archaic; AL has just acquired Goowy and its ‘Webtop’ workspace technology ThinkFree offers a platform independent on-line office suite and Zoho provides a replete set of online applications that present offline capabilities courtesy of Google Gears… In response Microsoft has also launched a new service to help individuals and teams collaborate. This growing battle for dominance in the online document collaboration space is reminiscent of the office application wars fought between Lotus Microsoft and WordPerfect (now owned by Corel) in the 1990s. However this time around the market is very different as ‘information work’ is no longer the sole domain of the white collar worker.

But there have been recent signs of new life. Dell Computer for example has begun offering both a desktop and a portable computer with Ubuntu pre-installed as an alternative to Microsoft’s operating systems. At the same time there are some signs of resistance to Microsoft’s Windows Vista with some corporations moving back to Windows XP… The company’s chief executive Stephen Dukker is the former head of eMachines which brought the $400 machine to the PC market. He sees NComputing as a way to make PC’s affordable worldwide. He has a slide in his PowerPoint demo that declares his strategy: “The $70 PC. ” Today’s desktop PC Mr. Dukker said is “essentially a supercomputer that goes largely unused. ” So far schools have been the big early market for NComputing’s technology a combination of simple hardware and specialized software. Ninety percent of sales have been to schools and it looks especially attractive to some governments in developing nations.

I suggest then you try Photostory for Windows (a Microsoft freebie) which will make a photo slideshow and has a function to add a voiceover for each slide as well as some background music of your own choice or from the selection provided with the program itself. There are basic transition effect you can add if you want. The result is quite presentable :-) .
