Microsoft to publish software secrets
Atlanta Journal Constitution – Feb 22, 2008
Under the Microsoft plan a company like Red Hat would have to pay royalties for the use of Microsoft-patented technologies even though the software itself is given away. In another change of course Microsoft said it would modify its ffice software to let outside programmers develop new file formats for storing data. Microsoft has come under fire from government agencies worldwide forusing its own private formatting system for documents created in Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint. This means agencies will have to use Microsoft products to view the documents and can’t read them with other companies’ software. Concern about this issue led the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2005 to threaten to abandon Microsoft ffice and adopt a more open alternative. Microsoft created a new document format ffice pen XML which it is trying to have certified by the International Standards rganization as an open document format. Microsoft has refused to adopt an existing open standard called penDocument Format.

h and don’t worry about the 10 people that sit facing your screen they’ve only been staring on and off at exactly how many states Hillary or McCain are maybe going to win in today’s primaries. This process of removing people from the classroom works in reverse too. I’m sure you’ve had one or two teachers that love their favorite teaching crutch: the ugly awful horrible Microsoft PowerPoint. If you are one of the five odd people sitting behind Laptop Guy passive-aggressively watching him write on Susie-Q’s Facebook wall about his super awesome weekend then you must really hate it when a professor pulls out his flash-drive and wiggles it into the PC in the front of the class. It takes him or her five minutes to awkwardly stumble through every one of their personal folders to find the golden nugget.

For example it makes it feasible rest the Tilt on a tabletop instead of having to hold it which is handy whether you’re actively using the device or just passively viewing material like photos or videos. This being a Windows Mobile device the included software is a pretty standard compliment. But since the Tilt uses Windows Mobile 6 Professional it comes with a version of Microsoft ffice (Word Excel PowerPoint plus utlook) that can edit and create new documents as well as view existing ones. You can probably even find a lot of it on command. Back in the old days there were different programs for word processing and spreadsheets. Along came suites such as Microsoft ffice and now you can search for data in a database run it through a spreadsheet then paste it into a report. The freely downloadable Google Desktop program is truly ECM for dummies. It means that you don’t need to remember exactly what name you called a file since you can search by content. Remembering that Parent quoted George Carlin was enough to get me to his presentation which I saved on my computer under some obscure file name. The security guy in me cries out to warn you that Google Desktop can be a double-edged sword… So if you have lists such as “people we’re going to fire soon” or “things we don’t tell the taxman” you should think twice about installing this program. Parent says that ECM systems are for “unstructured data” which he defines as anything that’s not in a relational database. Word documents PowerPoint presentations videos large maps webpages all of the rich media content. “il and gas companies are flying over environmental sites and taking video – that’s unstructured content” he says. All of these can be stored filed and managed in an ECM system. Should you save everything?”Absolutely not” says Parent. “Forget about letters to Grandma that are done at work and messages that say ‘meet me downstairs for coffee’ even if it’s in an e-mail.
