Microsoft Goes Live at Educause Meeting
Chronicle of Higher Education – Chronicle of Higher Education (subscript… – Oct 24, 2007
The goal: To show off ffice Live Workspace the latest addition to Microsoft Live@edu. Live@edu is Microsoft’s integrated e-mail calendar and instant-messaging suite for colleges—oh and don’t bother buying new servers because the company will host everything for you on the Web. Now Microsoft has tacked on ffice Live another Web-based product that allows users to upload Word documents PowerPoint slides and Excel spreadsheets and share them with others via the Web. The big selling point so far: You won’t have to e-mail that term paper from one computer to another anymore. Just log on to the Web site and grab it. —Josh Fischman.

ffice Mobile to come as an optional download?
Cnet Asia – Oct 24, 2007
However the bigger question I am sure many handheld users will be wondering is shouldn’t ffice Mobile be already part of the WM6 Standard operating system? After all Microsoft did tout ffice Mobile as one of the key feature enhancements for the Windows Mobile 6 Standard edition for smart phones during the launch of the handheld S earlier this year. For those still new to the Windows Mobile S ffice Mobile allows viewing and editing both Word and Excel as well as viewing of PowerPoint files. Previously WM5 smart phones would typically offer Picsel Viewer which allows only viewing of Word Excel and PowerPoint files. So naturally CNET Asia has to ask Microsoft Singapore the burning question on behalf of its readers. Just why was ffice Mobile no longer bundled as part of the standard package in WM6 devices? And the answer? “We have always provided ffice Mobile as an optional license for our partners so they can offer the software that best meets the needs of their customers” said Microsoft Singapore in an email statement. Which of course threw up more unanswered questions.

Live Meeting 2007 – Web Access Problems
WebProNews – Oct 24, 2007
The Live Meeting installation information and product website recommends using the full client if possible for complete functionality. That is indeed a 15MB download with an installation disk space requirement of 125MB! The installation requires Microsoft Windows as the EXE and DLL components are written only for a Windows operating system. But there is an alternative. Live Meeting allows the use of "Meeting Web Access" (MWA) which lets you run the service from a web browser as a Java applet… Just to see how that worked for people who couldn’t do the disk installation. The web applet loaded within about 15 seconds which is reasonable. But no matter what I tried the control refused to load. I turned off my antivirus software I checked my Internet Explorer settings against the documentation and couldn’t find anything blocking it. Yet it stubbornly refused to work. I called tech support and got a nice guy in Austin Texas who stepped me through all the normal troubleshooting procedures (including my favorite.
