Apple’s iWork package is elegant but wimpy
Cape Cod Times – Aug 19, 2007
What Walt says Product: Apple’s iWork ’08 suite What it does: A productivity software suite for Macs that includes a word-processing program and a spreadsheet program. Cost: $79 What Walt likes: It’s a nice product that can turn out sophisticated and attractive documents. It can read Microsoft ffice documents and save them in ffice formats. What Walt dislikes: It isn’t as powerful or versatile as ffice and it places too much emphasis on making documents look good. In the past 10 years Apple has out-designed Microsoft and its hardware partners in a number of key areas. But can Apple really take on Microsoft in the category of productivity software where ffice rules on both Windows and the Mac?To find out I’ve been testing the new iWork which runs only on the Mac against the Mac version of ffice. My verdict: iWork ’08 is a nice product capable of turning out sophisticated and attractive word-processing presentation and spreadsheet documents… Numbers has some other nice features to make things simpler. Any cell meant to contain a value you type in can be controlled with a slider or up-and-down arrows so you can rapidly see how different numeric values would alter calculations without a lot of retyping. I also found that Numbers made it easier than Excel to sort columns and to add or move columns and rows. And Numbers lets you drag and drop common formulas such as Sum and Average to the bottom of a column of numbers. For real spreadsheet jockeys however Numbers is wimpier than Excel. It has only about half as many functions for making calculations and doesn’t do pivot tables.

iWork is something fresh and innovative with it’s own unique user interface and functions. They have actually thinked themself how it should be done not just copied Microsoft like everyone in the open source movement tend to do. Reply Parent Bookmark Score: 4… MS Excel is an exceptionally good product and I am yet to find another spreadsheet program that compares to the power and flexibility Excel offers. Word is also a very good word processor. Access is rubbish however (Filemaker is much better) and powerpoint is K but the penffice equivalent is adequate as well. penffice is K but for all of Microsoft’s flaws Word and Excel are very nice apps. I’m really happy with what MS have done as far as ffice 2007 goes. is a bit sluggish by comparison in my experience and doesn’t have all of the features and polish that ffice does.

With the built in organizer superb contacts list and fantastic integration with the most common MS ffice applications its almost like a personal secretary in your pocket. Though not completely dependent it shines most if you are a big MS utlook user in addition to MS ffice applications (like Word Excel and PowerPoint). The MS utlook features integrate well with the communications functions (both voice and data). utlook Contacts are one of the highest featured address-books Ive ever seen. The Calendar is just unbeatable and its also in your pocket! EVD internet connectivity speeds are just short of current ‘cable-modem speeds’. For ‘most’ basic surfing I only noticed a small difference compared to Wi-Fi.
