Want to go to biz school? Dust off PowerPoint skills
USA Today – Jul 30, 2007
It could be called corporate America’s final surrender to a technology that in the name of promoting the flow of information often gums it up by encouraging bureaucratic jargon and making colorful but useless graphics just a little too easy to produce. Nonetheless PowerPoint has become the lingua franca of business meetings worldwide. Its 500 million copies are used (or misused) in 30 million presentations per day Microsoft has estimated. PowerPoint is so common in the business world that “it’s actually your word processor” said Michael Avidan a second-year Chicago MBA student who reads applications for the graduate program and helped it do a dry run. His slides were a play featuring a Greek chorus questioning him about his application. “When you apply to business school he said using a buzz word for the best a student has to offer “it’s only natural that your ‘deliverables’ be in PowerPoint. Martinelli acknowledges one reason for the requirement is that students will inevitably have to master the technology in their jobs.

No expense sparedbviously no expense was spared in launching this product from the beautifully attired ushers to smartly attired company executives from Jamaica and the Caribbean region. The drug firm’s representatives plus one medical doctor spoke volumes about the advantages of taking the new addition to the Panadol family of pain relievers. Impressive Microsoft PowerPoint presentations outlined its virtues while carefully sending home the message that this was for the woman in the primary target market of age 15-25. It is estimated that 40 out of every 100 women experience dysmenorrhoea. This manifests in the form of cramps backache nausea and even vomiting. Woman’s Panadol contains caffeine which could present problems if taken by teens in the evenings but there are beneficial results.

As the lights dim and the laptop begins to purr we are suddenly lulled into a semi-comatose state. The presenter prepares to introduce the first of more than 30 slides and we prepare for the grueling endurance test that lies ahead perhaps second only to the Iditarod. If we dread it so much why has it been estimated that there are more than 30 million PowerPoint presentations taking place all around the world each day even though the result may be businessmen staring glassy-eyed at endless slides in boardrooms all over New York New Zealand and New Delhi? There has to be a reason that PowerPoint has been the industry program and the most common presentation software on the market since Microsoft introduced it in 1990 effectively replacing the 35 mm projector presentation. A Storm before the calm?

That’s fallen now to about 160000 with 20000 available. It’s not particularly well-protected and you (if “you” means “a talented security researcher at ease writing Perl web crawlers”) can examine its extent comparatively easily without the knowledge of its owners. The source of this information is a. 4Mb Powerpoint presentation) by Brandon Enright of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) given at the Toorcon conference… The slides suggest some very involved work went into the unravelling of Storm but Enright’s work does give some encouragement that the malware writers don’t have it all their own way. He thinks that the Storm malware (which is a mixture of virus Trojan rootkit) could have infected up to 15m computers but that most of those have been cleaned up or in some other way taken off the network. Microsoft made a significant dent in Storm in September by adding a detection signature to its Malicious Software Removal Tool; overnight infection rates dropped by 20%. What’s most interesting about his work though is that it shows how the authors of the peer-to-peer structure have built on existing ones very straightforwardly: the protocols from the file-sharing network eDonkey (such as the method for numbering adjacent Storm “peers”) seem to have been their starting point and they didn’t go much further. Distributed bot networks like this are really just small file-sharing systems after all; but the entrance points are kept hidden rather than letting anyone join in. Indeed it’s interesting how the bot herders (as they’re called) are wary of who they’ll let on their systems: I’ve heard that you can hire the networks quite cheaply but what you do on it will be monitored. If it isn’t in some way criminal then they’ll know you’re either a cop a security researcher or a journalist; the outcome is not good.
