ffice 2007′s New Format
Manila Bulletin – May 31, 2007
A lot of these questions have been about ffice 2007 and the newest file formats of Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint called the ffice pen XML formats (XML). Last week I talked about Microsoft?s approach to interoperability through design. The move to pen XML for ffice file formats is a result of this commitment to contribute to technology that enables interoperability. XML stands for Extensive Markup Language a flexible text format derived from SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) that allows designers to specify document formatting and enables people from different organizations using different applications to view and work with the same data. You know HTML right? The format used by web pages? Well if it was a family XML would have to be the brother of HTML and SGML would be the Mother! pen XML is backwards compatible which allows file sharing between different versions of ffice.
