Penny Pincher’s Almanac

Microsoft has a winner with its new ffice 2007Gene Marks An amazing thing has happened this year. has produced a product that I can wholeheartedly recommend to penny-pinching business owners. It's ffice 2007. And it's worth buying… That product was easy to install user-friendly and relatively bug free. It had all the basic software that a typical small business needed — a word processor spreadsheet database e-mail powerpoint etc. Since that version Microsoft has jammed more complex clunky and bloated versions of ffice down our throats without providing us any real economical incentives to upgrade. But finally we're given an ffice suite that includes two very very good tools for the small business owner. And they're part of the price. The first is an expanded version of the utlook Business Contact Manager (BCM).

Students continuing to use Windows XP need not worry however since even after the 2008 campus-wide Vista upgrade Eckardt said campus computing will continue to support XP for a least a year or more. Along with a new version of Windows Microsoft has also released a new line of Microsoft ffice products. These include familiar programs such as Word Excel and PowerPoint. Transferring documents created in different versions of Microsoft ffice is supported however. Eckardt said there are already free downloadable translators available that allow documents created in ffice 2007 to be opened in ffice 2003. He added that ffice 2003 users would be prompted to install the translator if they attempt to open an ffice 2007 document. ffice 2007 can also open and save to the ffice 2003 format.

Microsoft’s new program is called Microsoft Service Credits for Search. It’s aimed at changing the search behavior of employees at large companies. Here’s how it works: companies that sign up for the program earn a $25000 enrollment credit that can be redeemed for Microsoft products and training. But that’s just the beginning. If the company promotes use of Microsoft Live Search it can earn anywhere from $2 to $10 a user annually depending on how much Microsoft’s search engine is used… But that’s just the beginning. If the company promotes use of Microsoft Live Search it can earn anywhere from $2 to $10 a user annually depending on how much Microsoft’s search engine is used. Batelle had a PowerPoint slide on his site that explained how it could work. It showed that a company with 10000 PCs that did a lot of web searching could earn $120000; a company with 50000 PCs that didn’t search the web quite as much could earn $200000. Those numbers can add up very quickly. So how does Microsoft know you’re really with the program? Every computer at an enterprise participating in the program will have IE7 installed with a “Browser Helper bject. ” (I know I couldn’t help but imagine Clippy popping up and saying “It looks like you’re doing a web search!” either).
