Microsoft ffice: Any Alternatives?
CRN – Feb 19, 2007
For a discussion of the formats. You can download a plug-in to allow Microsoft Word to save in DF (Excel and PowerPoint plug-ins are in the works too). Whatever you do test test test. As Haugland says “Anyone doing a transition should do a couple of months of testing with interested users. ” This will let users feel involved and let you snag problems before a wider rollout. Haugland has more sage advice to facilitate the change: “An important part of any evaluation is to do a companywide ‘lunch and learn’ to compare ffice and penffice side by side.
Vista depends on how you look at it
Siliconrepublic.com – Feb 19, 2007
2007 VISTA: Microsoft Word’s dictionary defines vista as: (a ) a scenic or panoramic view; (b) a view seen through a long narrow opening for example between rows of trees or buildings; or (c) a mental picture covering a wide range of objects or a long succession of events in the past or future. Years in the making Microsoft will be hoping that the main vista opening up for its memory-hungry new operating system will be into expansive cash rich business markets. Vista of course comes with a lot of new bells and whistles. Visibly it looks different and after playing with it for a while it feels different as well. That’s not to say that the bells and whistles are just ornamental trinkets attached on the whim of a fanciful programmer. Microsoft makes the claim that the new interface improves productivity by allowing better visualisation of data and presenting a more professional appearance… So if you’re working on a spreadsheet it can guess what you are going to do next and present you with choices of what you want to do. So the dropdown menu has gone away and what you have now are tabbed sheets. “And in PowerPoint we’ve included built-in diagrams so presentations can be done on the fly. Basically we wanted to make the tech as invisible as possible in Vista and ffice so it’s removing the distance between what the information worker wants to do and what they have to do and try to make the steps in between as few as possible. “So how to upgrade? The software giant has been offering upgrades to Vista since the end of ctober. Any new machines bought in the past couple of months would have a coupon to allow the user to upgrade to Vista at the end of January. You may get a free upgrade or you may have to pay depending what version of the operating system you bought.

The interface was well enhanced” said Glenn Gonzaga Globe Telecom technical support specialist of Microsoft Vista. Gonzaga was one of the hundreds who went to Ayala Center Cebu Friday for the public launching of Microsoft Vista. Gonzaga said that while he assumes the price of a licensed Microsoft Vista can be expensive especially for home-use it is still “worth the price. “Microsoft Southern sales operation director Magtanggol Bawal said the price of the new Microsoft Vista ranges from P13000 to P15000. “Hassle-free” said Honey Lou Palatan a second year Bachelor of Nursing student at the University of San Carlos after watching a demonstration of the new Microsoft ffice 2007. It’s easy to change fonts… It’s easy to change fonts. The interface is the same but now has specific options” said Palatan. She added that the new Microsoft ffice 2007 is a significant tool for most students especially as it speeds up the process of doing school reports thesis and term papers and PowerPoint presentations among others. “It’s a bit pricey but very useful” Palatan said. Anita Sanchez didn’t have to be shown the features of Microsoft Vista before deciding to buy a laptop already installed with the program. “I have read about it in the newspapers and cut out articles about it.

If the foundation decides to take action the ban would apply to new versions of Linux covered under a licensing agreement due to take effect in March. Linux sales accounted for five percent of the $967 million in revenue that Novell reported last year. The deal with Microsoft has turned into a far bigger cash generator as it calls for Microsoft to make two upfront payments totalling $348 million. The two companies agreed to jointly sell their products and also develop technologies to make it easier for businesses to use Linux alongside Windows software. They will also license each other’s intellectual property. Members of the open-source community have called on Novell to pull out of the pact saying it would undermine the patent position of Linux software and also give Microsoft an edge in persuading businesses to use Microsoft products over Linux and other types of open-source software. 2006: Year of cybercrime… Even a Web site maintained by a Kentucky Boy Scout troop wasn’t safe for casual browsing. Computer-security experts said 2006 was also the year that hacking stopped being a hobby and became a lucrative profession practised by an underground of computer developers and software sellers. Like true business people bad guys not only broadened their reach by attacking popular social-networking sites they also diversified their product line by launching attacks through popular software applications like PowerPoint and Adobe Reader and expanded their activities overseas. Software makers who try to stop online crooks say they are bracing for a new level of nastiness in 2007 including malicious Web sites that are booby-trapped with software that automatically loads itself onto machines of users who simply visit a site. ther scams include combining a traditional pump-and-dump stock scam with the takeover of online brokerage accounts and renting out vast networks of zombie computers known as botnets to other digital desperadoes. Some of the code is designed so that it automatically downloads itself the minute a user accesses a Web page. ther sites prompt a user to accept what seems to be legitimate software but is actually a malicious program.

0 is simple enough to use but it isn’t TWAIN- or WIA-compliant so you can’t access the scanner when using other applications such as a word processor or image editor. Another distinction is that the s500 saves images only in PDF and JPEG file formats whereas most document scanners also support TIFF and other graphics formats. The s500′s driver includes an integrated optical character recognition function (Abbyy FineReader for ScanSnap 2. 0) which converts documents into editable files in Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint formats. Although this function lacks a proofreading mode (a handy feature that scanners with separate instead of integrated CR applications provide) the s500 still did a reasonably fine job of converting several test documents into editable text with a high degree of accuracy. ther bundled software includes Adobe Acrobat 7. 0 Standard two proficient document management applications (ScanSnap rganizer 3.
