But that was long ago — back in the mid-’80s when Prince stood in the purple rain Madonna was like a virgin and Bill Gates was just another nerd. Now people write with Microsoft Word. Prince stood in a Super Bowl rain Madonna is a mommy and Bill Gates is still a nerd. But he’s the world’s richest nerd thanks in part to Word. The change illustrates a technology truism. Even the most popular software and its proprietary format can become tomorrow’s floppy disk.

Most if not all anti-virus programs these days come with schedulers so you can tell it to scan weekly or even daily and also to search for updates on its own as long as the computer is turned on. While Macintosh computers are not vulnerable to being harmed by viruses they can spread them to other computers. So be a kind networker and scan regularly! Also for Mac users: are you bitter about still being chained to the Microsoft beast via programs like Word and Internet Explorer? Never fear here are some alternative programs you can use to buck the system. penffice is an open source program that does basically everything Microsoft ffice does. Writer replicates nearly all of Word’s functions Impress is for all your PowerPoint needs Calc takes the place of Excel Base takes care of any database needs you might previously have been managing with Access and there’s even more. You don’t need to be worried about compatibility issues either; you have the option of saving in the penffice format (which creates much smaller file sizes) or saving in a Microsoft format so that you can open it in Word or Excel later. The same can be said with the ffice family. It takes most of us long enough to get used to where everything is and what various things do. And then Microsoft come along and brings out a new version. The difference between the 2007 model and previous incarnations is immense. Every previous incarnation looked similar to its predecessor only there were new features added in. With 2007 Microsoft has changed the entire appearance of ffice ostensibly with the purpose of making it easier for new users to immerse themselves. But this means a new learning curve for established users… This can be resolved by just typing “. doc” at the end of the filename but it’s still something to be aware of. Most journalists loathe Excel and PowerPoint. We just use them solely to view information rarely to create documents. In this case the virtues of ffice 2007 became abundantly clear. With 2007 what previously seemed like complex tasks such as creating graphs shapes pie-charts suddenly become the first things you attempt to do. Result!utlook 2007 at first look appeared no different to what we use today but an innovative to-do bar on the right hand side of the screen brings the calendar onto your screen each time you sweep your cursor to the right.
$100 Computers Run on Child Power
hmyNews International – Feb 20, 2007
The computers are made out of colorful rugged plastic and do not look like standard computers. In fact Negroponte wanted the computers to look unique and run on easy-to-use and fun programs. Negroponte wrote in an e-mail interview with AP:”In fact one of the saddest but most common conditions in elementary school computer labs [when they exist in the developing world] is the children are being trained to use Word Excel and PowerPoint. I consider that criminal because children should be making things communicating exploring sharing not running office automation tools. “[2]The computers do not have hard disk drives but instead use flash memory and are equipped with antennas that will allow them to connect with other nearby computers. They even possess built-in cameras which will allow students to take pictures of themselves and their environment. In addition each participating country will receive a version specific to their language… Some have called the computers “weak or crippled” and last year in March Bill Gates chairman of Microsoft mocked the computer for its “tiny little screen” and lack of hard disk drive. He went on to condescendingly advise:”If you are going to go have people share the computer get a broadband connection and have somebody there who can help support the user geez get a decent computer where you can actually read the text and you’re not sitting there cranking the thing while you’re trying to type. “[3]While Microsoft does not support the X its rival Google does. Google along with News Corp. (NWS) and Red Hat (RHAT) have donated about $29 million in money and technology to the project. ther skeptics worry that the computers will not reach their intended users. They feel that corrupt government officials will sell the computers for their own profits.
